What causes roof stains?
Black streaks that show up on roofs are caused by a fungus which grows on the northeast and northwest side of the house where there is less sunlight or any other area that is shaded. The streaks do not harm the roof, but they are unsightly taking away from curb appeal and often leading to a perfectly good roof being replaced. Moss is algae which grows in clumps on a roof and is the result of extreme shade, usually occurring where tree branches hang low. Moss can be harmful to your roof because it can grow beneath the shingles lifting them up, resulting in roof leaks.

What is the cost of cleaning a roof?
The cost of cleaning your roof is modest in comparison to replacing your roof. On most homes only one side is stained. So on an average size home the cost is typically between $320 - $350. Variables which go into pricing a job include:
the size of area to be cleaned,
severity of streaking and/or moss,
steepness and
degree of difficulty.
